WEYBURN, Saskatchewan – Minot State University's foray into international rules wrestling was less than ideal for the second straight season.
MSU was defeated by the University of Regina 33-11 Wednesday night in a collegiate wrestling exhibition match for the Beavers.
“It was an interesting night as we wrestling with the international rules and weight classes,” MSU head coach
Robin Ersland said. “We were hurt a little by the difference in weight classes. Our lowest weight class in college is 125 pounds, the international lowest weight is 119. So, obviously we didn't have anyone there.
“They had a nice crown in Weyburn. It was a good experience overall and a change of pace for the guys. Now, back to collegiate rules.”
Minot State's
Luke Michaelson (So., Williston, N.D.) and
Wade Weppler (Jr., Minot, N.D.) earned the Beavers wins. Michaelson pinned Regan Pratt in just 32 seconds of his match for the win at 82 kg (185 pounds). Weppler defeated John Lendvoy at 90 kg (198).
MSU ended up forfeiting four of the 10 matches, helping Regina to the big lead. Along with the lowest weight class, UR earned wins at 61 kg, 76 kg and heavyweight.
“
Marcus Wilson (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) was injured the night before we left in practice so we had to forfeit a weight I felt we would have done well in,” said Ersland. “Unfortunately, he will be out a couple weeks. We also have some guys we couldn't bring because they didn't have the right papers to cross the border and had some guys make poor decisions about when they would return to practice so we left them home.”
MSU is expected to have a full complement of wrestlers as the Beavers travel to Willmar, Minn., for the Ridgewater Open Saturday.
