MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University assistant women's basketball coach Shawn Chaffin has resigned his position to be named the head coach at San Diego Christian.
Chaffin just completed his sixth season with the Beavers. He returns to head coaching duties as he spent four seasons prior to MSU as the head coach at the University of Great Falls (Mont.).
"While I will always treasure the relationships that I have developed in my time here at Minot State, I am excited for my next challenge at San Diego Christian," Chaffin said. "The vision and mission of the school and department very much appealed to me. The future of Lady Hawk basketball is bright."
During his tenure at Minot State, Chaffin helped the Beavers through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. He coached Carly Boag to the school's first ever NCAA Division II All-America team and helped Boag become the first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year. In 2015-16, Chaffin tutored MSU rising junior
Kari Clements to the NSIC All-Freshman team, the first individual in program history to be named to that team.
MSU finished 19-9 in 2013-14, making the NSIC tournament.
"I would like to thank all those players, coaches including (former MSU head coach) Sheila (Green Gerding), (former assistant coach) Gary (Walhaug) and (former MSU assistant women's basketball and softball coach) Bill (Triplett), faculty and staff who have been incredibly gracious to me in my six years here at MSU. And I would also like to give special thanks to Dr. Shirley (Minot State president Dr. Steven Shirley) and Kevin Harmon for all of their support through the process."
Along with his stop at UGF, Chaffin coached at the University of Montana-Western and was a high school coach at Florence-Carlton High School. He also worked in the admissions office at Montana State-Northern.
