Stu Melby is in his 13th season as head track & field and cross country coach at Minot State University.
Under Melby's guidance, MSU finished 22nd at the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championships on the women's side and placed 25th overall on the men's side. During the track and field season, MSU was 11th in both the men's and women's NSIC Indoor Championships, the men placed 11th in the NSIC Outdoor Championships and the women were 15th overall in the outdoor.
The 2016-17 saw the continued assent up the leaderboard by Tanner Gust in the hammer throw. Gust finished the season as the school's record holder the event and placed fourth overall at the NSIC Outdoor Championships.
Melby guided Jana Jones to a 75th place finish at the NCAA Central Regional in cross country and an eighth place finish in both the indoor 800-meters and the outdoor 1,500.
MSU finished with 16 individuals on the NSIC Fall and Spring All-Academic teams.
During the 2014-15 seasons Melby coached 16 athletes who were named to the NSIC All-Academic teams in cross country and track & field. He oversaw the rise of freshman Cody Schmidt, the NSIC Newcomer of the Year, who placed 11th at DII Outdoor Champioships in the javelin event. The 4x100m team also broke a school record under Melby finishing with a time of 42.24.
Along with some great individual performances in competition for the Beavers in 2013-14, Melby helped place three track and field athletes on the All-Academic USTFCCCA Team and both the men and women's team were recognized for the second straight year by the USTFCCCA for their academic performance.
In 2012-13, Melby coached multiple student-athletes to success in the Conference, Regional and National levels. Melby helped Tyler Flatland to a third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles and Abbey Aide competed in the 2013 Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
Melby has coached two NAIA National Champions (Genevieve Binsfeld in cross country and in the indoor 3,000 meters), 14 NAIA All-Americans (seven in outdoor track and field, four in cross country and three in indoor track and field), three NCAA Division I All-Americans and eight NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes.
Melby started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater The University of Montana in Missoula, Mont. He was the Assistant Women's Cross Country and Track and Field-Distance coach at UM from 1993-94. He was a volunteer coach for the Grizzlies from 1996-2000.
His first head coaching job was for Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. from 2000-2004. At Lindsey Wilson, he was both cross country and track and field head coach.
Melby holds a Bachelor's Degree in Interpersonal Communications from Montana and has a Master's Degree in Health and Human Performance from UM.
Along with his degrees, Melby got his certification as USATF Level II in Track and Field Coach in 1993 and his Level II Track and Field Coach - Sprints/Hurdles/Relays (1997), Throws (2003) and Jumps (2005).
