Westminster ends Minot State's run

Beavers shut out in first round of playoffs

Minot State's Ashley Goheen takes a shot earlier in the season. MSU had its first-ever season come to an end at the Unaffiliated Tournament in Helena, Mont., Wednesday.
HELENA, Mont. – Minot State University could not get an equalizing goal for much of the second half as Westminster College (Utah) defeated the Beavers 1-0 at the 2010 Unaffiliated Dakota Athletic/Frontier/MCAC tournament Wednesday in Helena, Mont.
The loss ends the Beavers, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, inaugural season at 9-7-3 overall.
Neither team generated much offense as the beavers managed nine shots, while Westminster finished with four. The Griffins capitalized on their small chances however, scoring in the 50th minute as Heather Hillam got one past MSU's Marie Torres (Jr., G, Burlingame, Calif.). WC's Megan Maldonado got an assist on the goal.
Torres made three saves in the match, her first match since breaking her ankle Sept. 15.
The Beavers tried to get the goal back as they had six second-half shots, took four corners and forced Westminster goalkeeper Lindsay Bekken to make four saves.
In all, MSU had nine different players take one shot apiece and six different players had one shot on goal.
Westminster (12-4), the No. 5 seed in the tournament, moves on to play top seed Carroll College in today's semifinal. The other semifinal pits No. 2 seed Bellevue University (Neb.) against Rocky Mountain College (Mont.).
