JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The final score didn't completely tell the story.
Minot State University won three matches Thursday night at a dual against Jamestown College, but the Beavers gave up too many pins to keep the final close.
The Jimmies earned falls in four matches and won three others to post a 34-9 win of MSU in NAIA wrestling.
“We just gave up too many pins,” MSU head coach
Robin Ersland said. “We won three matches and should have won five.”
MSU got off to a solid start as
Robert Herrera (So., Sarasota, Fla.) defeated Sean Blumhart 8-2 at 125 pounds. The match was a good beginning for Minot and was as statement match for Herrera early in his career as Blumhart came into the week ranked seventh in the NAIA at 125 pounds. Herrera, who is ranked 11th in the coaches poll at 125, continues to impress in just over a month as he remained unblemished in a Beavers uniform.
Deon Buhl (Jr., Lacey, Wash.) defeated Zach Pickering 5-3 at 141 and
Coby Carson (Fr., Inola, Okla.) topped Sam Brown 8-4 at 157, but MSU still trailed 12-9 despite winning three of five matches.
“It's frustrating because we couldn't stay off our backs,” Ersland said. “Plus, we should have won the matches at 174 and 197 and ended up losing those. That's frustrating.”
The Jimmies picked up wins in the final five weights including pins by Pat Nord at 165 and Aaron Field at Heavyweight.
MSU moves back into tournament play as they travel to the North Country Open Saturday at Collegeville, Minn.
