Beavers shut out by UM Crookston

MSU can't overcome slow start, early Golden Eagle goal

Box Score
CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Minot State University women's soccer team suffered its first shutout of the season and only the seventh in school history as University of Minnesota Crookston dealt MSU a 1-0 defeat Wednesday in NCAA Division II soccer.

The Beavers (3-2-0) have now lost two matches in a row after opening the season with three straight victories.
UMC (1-4-0) got an early goal by Nikki Hammond in the 13th minute and made it stand up. It was the third first half goal given up by Minot State and the second in as many games as slow starts have plagued the Beavers for much of the season.

Minot State pushed to get the equalizer as they outshot UMC 12-10 and had an 8-4 edge in shots in the second half, but couldn't get one past Golden Eagle goalkeeper Amanda Stapleton. Stapleton finished with eight saves on her way to her first victory of the season.

MSU's keeper Ashley Barcewski (Jr., O'Fallon, Mo.) finished with five saves in 90 minutes of play.

The Beavers offense got three shots on goal from Zoe Fisher (Fr., F, Cambridgeshire, England) and two on net from Jamie Council (So., F, Atascadero, Calif.).

Minot State will look to regroup as they play host to the University of Mary Wednesday and Augustana College Friday during the Beavers Homecoming 2011 festivities. The UMary match is set for 7 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium, while the MSU v AC match will begin at 5:30 p.m.
