SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Minot State University still had some adjustments to make in the first half, but for the second straight outing, overcame early nerves to take a win.
The Beavers scored late in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second to earn a 2-0 shutout of Academy of Art (Calif.) in NCAA Division II women's soccer at the Cal State-San Bernardino Tournament Saturday.
“It was a great first trip,” said MSU head coach Jason Spain. “You can't ask for anything better. We still struggled a little in the first 15 minutes, but weathered the storm.”
The Beavers (2-0-0 overall) got on the board in the 44th minute on a header by junior Brittany Hunt (Mid, Bakersfield, Calif.) on a corner from Sidney Bockoven (So., Mid, Elk Grove, Calif.).
“We got to the half 1-0 and they seemed to wilt a little in the second half,” Spain said.
MSU used its head again in the second half to get the insurance goal as junior Shannon Walsh (Mid, Minot, N.D.) smashed in another corner, this time from freshman Chantal Paradis (D, Battle Ground, Wash.) in the 88th minute
“Shannon crushed the header,” said Spain. “We were definitely better in this game. A lot of the kids who didn't play well in the opener on Thursday, did today.
The two goals were plenty for goalkeeper Ashley Barcewski (Jr., O'Fallon, Mo.) who recorded her first shutout in a Beavers uniform.
“I was impressed with Ashley today,” Spain said.
MSU plays its home opener against Dordt College (Iowa) on Friday (5 p.m.) at Herb Parker Stadium.
