MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University sophomore
Courtney Schall (Distance, Minot, N.D.) set a Barnett Center record with a 10-minute, 4.87-second run in the 3,000 meters to pace a 17-personal best day for the Beavers at the Northern State University Triangular Saturday.
Schall crushed the former record of 10:19:20 set by Jessie Palczewski of Black Hills State in 2003. She was one of three Beavers who won an event and was the team's only double winner. Schall added a title in the mile, finishing with a 5:18.45.
“It was a great progressive meet for us. Having 17 PRs and three season bests is great, especially on the smaller track (160 meters),” said MSU head coach
Stu Melby. “There is a conversion factor for the smaller tracks and after that is figured in, the times will be that much better. It was a real nice step up for us. I am really happy with how we did today.”
Schall was joined by
Hanna Johnsen (So., Jumps/Sprints, Porsgrunn, Norway) and
Sienna Dailey (Fr., Jumps/Sprints,Distance, Glasgow, Mont.) as titlists on the day. Johnson finished first in the triple jump with a 34-feet-11¾ mark that was over nine inches clear of her closest competitor. Johnson added a second-place finish in the long jump as well, leaping 17-feet-0½. Dailey won her second straight 200-meters with a 26.90. Daily was third in the women's 400 as well (1:02.47).
Schall was joined by
Danielle Anderson (So., Distance, Richland, Wash.) and
Michelle Walling (So., Distance, Chula Vista, Calif.) for a Beavers' 1-2-3 sweep in the 3,000. Anderson finished with an 11:00.35 and Walling a 11:27.41.
“We had so many individuals who had standout days, it's hard to single out one or two,” Melby said. “We really were looking for improvements in the marks and we got that. Everyone worked hard and has a great attitude and there is some excitement with the kids and that showed today.”
Melby spoke highly of
Max Boeckel (So., Distance, Minot, N.D.) on the men's side as he finished third in the men's mile (4:42.51) and fifth in the 800 meter run after hanging back early in the race.
“
Max Boeckel was an animal today,” Melby said. “He really kicked it in the mile and finished as our No. 1 runner. Without the conversion, it was an 18 second PR. He kind of did the same thing in the 800. Once he heard the bell lap, we went like mad.”
Also finishing in the top three for MSU women was
Kamilah Vanterpool (So., Throws, Cordova, Calif.), who was second in the weight throw (43-7¼),
Samantha Engel (Fr., Throws, Minot, N.D.), third in the shot put (34-0¾). Sophomore
Breyette Schall (Distance, Minot, N.D.) made a successful return to the indoor team after battling injury to take third in the mile (5:23.47).
Pacing the men's team was
Josh Sandy (Fr., Jumps/Sprints, Velva, N.D.) who took second in the triple jump (40-9) and third in the 200 (24.23).
Eric Kuntz (Fr., Jumps/Sprints, Rugby, N.D.) was third in the pole vault (13-5¼) and the 55-meter dash (6.92),
Jeremy Holman (Jr. Multis, Chula Vista, Calif.) finished third in the long jump (20-5) and
Carlos Hernandez (So., Distance, San Diego, Calif.) was third in the 3,000 (9:40.1).
“We had some new people in their first meet of the season and some others doing events they don't normally do or didn't do last week (at Bemidji State),” said Melby. “We will keep getting the training in and shoot for more improvements.”
The Beavers will travel to Moorhead, Minn., for the Concordia College Open next Saturday.
