U-Mary spoils Beavers NSIC debut

Minot State can't control middle weights in loss

MINOT, N.D. – The University of Mary controlled the middle weights en route t oa 28-16 win over Minot State University, spoiling the Beavers Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual debut Wednesday at the Minot State Dome.

The Marauders (1-0 overall, 1-0 NSIC) earned four wins from 141 pounds to 165 to open a 22-4 leads they did not relinquish.

“We didn't wrestle very well at all tonight,” said MISU head coach Robin Ersland. “We weren't ready to go. That's my fault.”

The Beavers (1-1 overall, 0-1 NSIC) got off to a solid start as Joshua Douglas (So., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.) won by major decision over Hunter Menendez 8-0 at 133.
But the Beavers couldn't capitalize on early momentum.

“You know, at 141, their guy (Trevor Johnson) is nationally ranked, that's a tough match for us,” Ersland said. “But I thought at 149, 157, 165 – those are guys we should compete with.”

The swing of the match involved Minot State's brothers Marcus Wilson (Sr., 149, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jon Wilson (So., 157, Colorado Springs, Colo.) as both had chances on getting wins, but couldn't finish off their opponent. Marcus Wilson fell 13-8 to Landon Della Silva and Jon Wilson was edged 3-2 by Collin Engelhardt.

After a forfeit win by Matt Fetterley (Jr., 174, Muskegon, Mich.) at 174, the Beavers only trailed 22-10 and had a shot, but U-Mary's Brady Anderson and John Devito finished with tight wins over MISU's Cody George (Sr., 184, Great Falls, Mont.) and Jack Murphy (Fr., 197, Bakersfield, Calif.) to put the match out of reach.

Minot State's Bobby Bartz (So., HWT, Harvey, N.D.) closed things out in fine fashion for the Beavers, earning his second pin of the season, at 1:22 of his bout with Levi Roemmich.
The Beavers are not attending the St. Cloud State Open this weekend and will now be off until Dec. 15 where they travel to No. 2 ranked St. Cloud State for an NSIC dual.
