SIOUX FALLS, S.D.– For the second time in as many days, the Minot State wrestling team fell on the road in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
The Beavers (0-6 Overall, 0-3 NSIC) were downed by perennial power Augustana College (6-2 Overall, 2-0 NSIC) by a score of 36-6 at the Elmen Center Sunday afternoon.
"The score does not reflect how much better we wrestled today than yesterday," said Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland. "We wrestled with better intensity and more purpose today. We lost some tough ones but the effort was better. We need to be more consistent to make the next step forward."
The Vikings used three pins, including two in the first three matches of the dual, to lead them to victory after not wrestling against an opponent for nearly a month. Augie's Tim Weber pinned
Donovan Williams (Sr., 149, Greater Islip, N.Y.) at 165 pounds to open the dual while Sean Derry pinned Minot State freshman
Justin Berg (Fr., 174, Lynn Haven, Fla.) at 184 pounds.
Matt Fetterley (Sr., 174, Muskegon, Mich.) and
Ricard Avakovs (So., 157, Riga, Latvia) were the only to MISU wrestlers to pick up wins on Sunday. Fetterley won in a low-scoring, defensive match by a score of 2-0 while Avakovs took a more aggressive approach, racking up 14 points on his way to a 14-9 decision over Bradyn Neises to end the dual.
With the win Avakovs is now tied with
Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) with 12 wins, ranking them second on the team behind wins leader
Marcus Polak (Jr., 165, Minot, N.D.) with 16 wins.
The Beavers will now have a week of preparation for the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals on Saturday Jan. 18. MISU is scheduled to face three teams receiving votes in the NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll including No. 6 Adams State.
