Minot State notches first win

Joshua Douglas went 3-1 on the day, helping MISU to their first win of the 2013-14 season

KEARNEY, Neb. – Minot State University wrestling picked up their first dual win of the 2013-14 season Saturday afternoon at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals.

After getting off to a slow start on the day, the Beavers (1-9 Overall, 0-3 NSIC) wrestled better in their last three matches including a 35-13 win over Newman University.

"It was really nice to get our first win," said Minot State head coach Robin Ersland. "We looked pretty solid and were much more aggressive than we did earlier today."

In the win against Newman, Joshua Douglas (Jr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.), Jon Wilson (So., 149, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) all notched wins by fall to lead MISU to their first win in over a year. Douglas, led the way for Minot State on the day as he went 3-1 during his four bouts.

In the fourth and final dual of the day, MISU gave nationally ranked No. 11 Adams State all they could handle. However, the Grizzlies were able to hold off the Beavers in a 27-26 win for ASU.

"It was a good, solid effort against a traditionally strong national power," said Ersland. "Pins were the difference in the dual as we had two for us but couldn't stay off our back as we were pinned three times."

In the loss, Paasch and Bobby Bartz (Sr., HWT, Harvey, N.D.) picked up wins by fall for the Beavers. Paasch now leads the team with eight wins by fall for the season.

Now with confidence, the Beavers have one more non-conference dual against University of Regina on the road on Thursday Jan. 23 before they resume Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference duals.
