WARRENSBURG, Mo.– Minot State wrestling faced some tough competition Sunday afternoon at the University of Central Missouri Duals.
The Beavers went 0-3 as MISU head coach
Robin Ersland returned to his former school for the first time since becoming head coach of the Minot State program in 2010. Minot State fell to Central Missouri (27-12) and then fell to two nationally ranked teams; No. 2 University of Nebraska-Kearney (31-13) and No. 12 Ouachita Baptist University (38-15).
"We took on some pretty tough competition today and that is somewhat reflected in the team scores," said Ersland. "But, what the team scores don't show is that in spots we actually wrestled very well in spots."
On the day
Joshua Douglas (Jr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.) went 2-1 winning his first two matches of the day, a 5-2 decision over UCM's Hunter Neighbors and 12-4 major decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Ryan Bauer.
Also going 2-1 during the duals were
Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) and
Matt Fetterley (Sr., 174, Muskegon, Mich.) who alternated between wrestling 174 pounds and 184 pounds. Paasch picked up his sixth win by fall on the season and his first collegiate career dual win as he pinned Oauchita Baptist's Joey Hutchins at the end of the first period. Fetterley won his first two matches on the day by decision before falling to NCAA Division II No. 1 ranked Dallas Smith from OBU.
"Josh and Matt both did great in their first two matches," said Ersland. "They both just ran into some great wrestlers against Ouachita Baptist. It was also good to see Tiger get a nice pin in his last match."
For the first time all season, Minot State had a wrestler active at the heavyweight position as
Bobby Bartz (Sr., HWT, Harvey, N.D.) returned to the mat after nursing an injury at the end of the football season. Bartz picked up right where he left off last season, going 2-1 for the duals with his loss coming to Nebraska-Kearney's Kelsey Empting, a former NCAA Division II All-American.
The Beavers, now 0-4 in duals on the season, will return to Northern Sun competition on Saturday Jan. 11 and Sunday Jan. 12 as they hit the road to take on Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday and then Augustana College on Sunday.
