Last second goal lifts Beavers

Biasetto scores with one second remaining in thrilling 2-1 win

MINOT, N.D. – It literally took the entire 90-minutes of play to determine the outcome of the women's soccer match between Minot State and Wayne State Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.

After giving up an early goal to the Wildcats and equalizing the score in the 55th minute, the Beavers' Gemma Biasetto (Jr., F, Albuquerque, N.M.) provided the game-winning goal Minot State was desperately looking for with one second remaining on the clock.

A turnover in the fifth minute of the game cost the Beavers early on as they had to play from behind from the start. Makenzie Evans stole the ball from a Beaver defender and slotted the ball past Celene Johnson (Jr., GK, Rocklin, Calif.) to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Minot State provided good pressure after the mishap, taking seven shots in the first half, but the Beavers were unable to find themselves on the scoresheet heading into halftime.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Minot State made the break through off a corner kick from Jamie MacFarlane (Sr., F, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Emilie Rebelo (Jr., D, Sacramento, Calif.) got her head on the cross and evened the score at 1-1. The goal was Rebelo's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Continuing to press for a second goal, the Beavers recorded 11 shots in the second half. The Wildcats' Kelsey Engstrom was sent off in the 75th minute causing Wayne State to play even more on the back-foot in the final 15 minutes of play.

The Beavers drew a free kick in the final minute of play and once again proved how important set pieces are to their success. Rebelo served in a ball that Biasetto collected and she finished the chance with one second remaining.

The dramatic win for the Beavers came at the right time as they dropped to seventh place in the NSIC with a loss at Augustana College yesterday. With the three points today, the Beavers move back to sixth place in the Northern Sun and improve to 7-5-1 in the conference and 8-6-2 overall. Wayne State falls to 1-12 in the conference and 2-13-1 overall.

The Beavers will wrap up regular season play this weekend when they first travel to Northern State in a Halloween match-up set for 1 p.m. Next Sunday the Beavers finish with Minnesota State-Moorhead at Herb Parker Stadium.
