MINOT, N.D. – An early goal within the first two minutes of play haunted the Beavers Wednesday afternoon as they fell to the Upper Iowa Peacocks in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC postseason tournament, 1-0.
A costly Minot State turnover in the back, which led to a through ball from Corinne Wronski to her sister Aimee Wronski, was the only sequence of play that led to a goal in the quarterfinal match. The goal was Wronski's 10th goal of the season.
Despite the early deficit, Minot State battled back in the first half placing four shots on goal, but ultimately headed to halftime with the game in the balance.
Upper Iowa came out fast in the second half taking three shots within the first five minutes of play, but the Beavers weathered the storm and started to get a grip of the game as the half went on.
Within the last six minutes of play, the Beavers had two corner kicks but were unable to capitalize on either. When the referee blew for fulltime, Minot State had five shots on goal but were unable to find themselves on the scoresheet.
"We played hard and dominated most of the match," head coach
Jason Spain said. "We made one mistake and it cost us."
Emilie Rebelo (Jr., D, Sacramento, Calif.) led the way for the Beavers attacking-wise as she was credited with three shots on frame in the contest. Goalkeeper
Celene Johnson (Jr., Rocklin, Calif.) came away with five saves in the match.
With the loss, the Beavers' season is likely done as they came into the week ranked as the No. 10 team in the NCAA's Central Region and only the top eight teams qualify for the NCAA postseason tournament.
Minot State's record moves to 10-7-2 overall in 2014. The Beavers finished the regular season with a 9-5-1 record in the Northern Sun.
With the win, Upper Iowa advances to play No. 1 seed and undefeated Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. in the NSIC postseason tournament semifinal.
