BISMARCK, N.D. – After falling in fourteen consecutive conference duals, the Minot State wrestling picked up their first ever Northern Sun win Friday night against rival University of Mary.
With the score tied 18-18 heading to the final bout of 184 pounds, MISU sent out one their most experienced wrestler, senior
Matt Fetterley (174/184, Muskegon, Mich.), to bring home the win.
He did just that as he beat U-Mary's Riley Nagel 6-4 to give his team their second win of the season. It was Fetterley's twelfth win of the season and gives him 18 team points.
"That was a heck of a lot tougher and more exciting than it needed to be", said Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland. "Nice job by the last three guys to pull out our first ever NSIC win. Tiger (
Tiger Paasch, Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) was really sick so it was a great effort by him and the whole team to get this one."
Paasch came up clutch picking up a 13-11 win over Tom Devito to set the stage for Fetterley.
Ricard Avakovs (So., 157, Riga, Latvia),
Jon Wilson (Jr., 149, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and
Joshua Douglas (Jr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.) all picked up wins for the Beavers. Arguably, Wilson and Douglas were the difference makers as they picked up wins by fall, picking up over half the team's points.
The difference in the match was MISU's ability to stay off their back. For the first time all season, Minot State was not pinned by their opponent in any weight class. However, the Beavers did forfeit 165 pounds, giving Marauders six easy points.
The Beavers will now make the short trip home and prepare for a mid-week dual against NSIC foe Northern State. The Wolves will make their trip to Minot to take on MISU at 7 p.m. on Wednesday Feb. 12.
