Minnesota State topples Beavers

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University wrestling team was unable to overcome Minnesota State University as it fell 44-3.

The Beavers began the night forfeiting at the 125 weight class and failing to come out on top in any match other than Cody Haugen's 3-1 decision victory at the 149 class.

Minnesota State recorded one major decision, two tech. falls and three pins on its way to winning eight out of the nine matches competed in by Minot State.

"It was really similar to what we saw last week against Upper Iowa," said head coach Evan Forde. "I feel like some of our guys toward the end of the semester were worn down. We were working hard and had a busy schedule, but we need to be tougher to pursue through that.

"We had some pretty good effort and a match won by Cody Haugen, but the thing right now is we need this break. We have to use that time wisely and come back ready to wrestle."

Forde said earlier in the week at the team's press conference that his team would need to score first to win their individual matches stating that statistically the wrestler that does so will go on to win the match.

This proved to be true as Minnesota State scored the first takedown in period one in all of its eight victories. In the win by Cody Haugen the Mavericks also scored first with an escape in the second period, but Haugen earned a takedown in the third and added one more point for riding time to win 3-1.

Minot State will compete again on January 7 at the University of Mary. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
