Minot State bats break out in season opener

Beavers pound out 16 runs, 19 hits, five extra base hits in win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Minot State University's offense broke out in game 1, rolling over Black Hills State 16-2 to open the season at the Montana State-Billings Desert Stinger Friday at Majestic Park.

It was the season opener for the Beavers (1-0 overall), while BHSU dropped to 0-2 on the first day of the tournament. MSU plays Northwest Nazarene in the nightcap of the tournament Friday and will finish with five games in three days in Vegas.

"We got off to a great start," said MSU head coach Bill Triplett. "Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) got our offense started with a bomb in her first collegiate at bat and Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) ripped a grand slam in the second inning. I was very pleased with our performance."

Hill spotted the Beavers a 1-0 lead with a solid shot in the second. After MSU's Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) singled home a run, Cygan cleared the bases with a home run to center field.

That was all starter Jenn Spencer (So., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and reliever Alyssa Cornejo (So., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) needed as the duo shut down BHSU to just four hits and two runs – one earned. Spencer pitched 3 1/3 innings for the win, while Cornejo did not give up a hit in an inning and two thirds.

"Spencer was very good in the circle as was Cornejo as well," Triplett said.

The Beavers slapped out 19 hits and had five extra base hits as Sarah Nicks (So., C, Grossmont, Calif.) finished with two doubles and Cornejo a double to add to the two home runs.

Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, Bell, Cornejo and Cygan all went 3 for 4 in the game and Jordan Grant (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) was 2-for-4 batting with three runs scored and an RBI from the leadoff spot.

Carrie Clark and Rebecca Gree had RBIs for the Yellow Jackets. Katilin Farr gave up eight runs and 10 hits in the loss for BHSU.

Cygan finished with four RBIs and three runs scored for MSU, while Nicks and Hill each drove in two in the win.
