CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University added two more wins to its total and ran its winning streak to eight games – the final eight of their annual Florida trip – topping Stevenson University 7-1 and Wayne State University 5-1 Tuesday at the National Training Center.
The Beavers (19-4 overall) dropped the first two games in Florida to start the trip, but surged from there, getting better as the week went on. MSU equaled their season-best with the eight game winning streak.
"We seemed to get better down here every game and we found out a lot about ourselves," said MSU head coach
Bill Triplett. "We had a great trip."
MSU's pitching was solid all tournament, but was dominant after Sunday's break from games. The Beavers staff gave up just two runs in four games as
Alyssa Cornejo (So., UTL/P, Riverside, Calif.) and
Mindy Lorimor (Sr., P, Thurman, Iowa) each earned wins Tuesday for the Beavers.
Cornejo struck out 10 batters on her way to her fourth win of the season in game 1. She allowed just three hits and one earned run in the complete-game win.
MSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and four more in the second.
Jordan Grant (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) continued a torrid spring as she went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Leyna Downey (Sr., OF, Missoula, Mont.) was 2 for 2 with an RBI and both
Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) and
Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) drove in two runs apiece.
"Grant and Downey did a good job at the plate and got two hits apiece and Cornejo was dominant in the circle," Triplett said. "We spread out hits out throughout the line-up and got the runs when we needed them."
In game 2, MSU's
Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) provided all the offense Lorimor would need. Burdette smacked a three-run home run in the top of the first inning – her team-leading fourth home run of the season – to stake the Beavers to a 3-0 lead. She added another RBI in the game to drive in four, while going 2 for 4 at the plate.
"Burdette was the hitting star and Lorimor was very good for us again today," Triplett said.
Lorimor worked seven innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run. She has been brilliant in Florida, appearing in seven games, pitching 45 innings, while allowing just seven earned runs. She went 5-1 in the Sunshine State with three shutouts and 37 strikeouts.
Along with Burdette, Bell finished with two hits, while Cygan was 1 for 2 at the plate, scoring two runs. Downey finished with another RBI as well for MSU in the win.
The Beavers will have a week to get ready for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule as MSU travels to rival University of Mary for a March 24 showdown with the Marauders in a pair of NSIC games.
