Beavers fall twice at WSC

Minot State strands too many runners in pair of NSIC losses

WAYNE, Neb. – Minot State University had its nine-game winning streak snapped at Wayne State College Saturday, falling twice in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball played at the Pete Chapman Complex.

The Beavers (20-7 overall, 1-2 NSIC) lost game 1 7-1 and were upended in game 2 6-5 in eight innings.

"Today was not our day," said MSU head coach Bill Triplett. "We beat ourselves in game 1 and we played well enough to win in game 2, but we couldn't get it done in extra innings."

In game 2, MSU had two leads it couldn't hold onto, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth and a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Each time however, the Wildcats (16-8, 2-2) tied the game in their half of the inning.

Minot State turned the tables, however, in the seventh to force extra innings. After WSC scored in the bottom of the sixth, Minot State's Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) drove home Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) with a double to center field.

MSU couldn't lock the split down in the eighth as Kelcie Bormann doubled home Lexie Loos who reached on an error to start the inning.

"Ali continues to play at an elite level, but we didn't get enough from the rest of the squad," Triplett said. "We will need to perform better tomorrow."

The Beavers finished with seven hits and drew seven base on balls, but left nine runners on base. It was a theme on Saturday for MSU as they finished with nine runners left on in two games. Cygan and Hill finished game 2 with two hits apiece with Cygan driving in one run and Hill two. Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) and Alyssa Cornejo (So., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) each finished with one RBI for the Beavers.

Cassy Miller earned the win in relief for WSC. S O'Brien went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Bormann was 2 for 3 with three runs batted in for the Wildcats.

MSU's Mindy Lorimor (Sr., P, Thurman, Iowa) suffered the loss, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Game 1 got away from the Beavers quickly in the middle innings. MSU had opportunities to get an early run, but stranded a runner in the first, three in the second and another in the third.

Meanwhile, Wayne State took advantage, scoring a run in the first, three in the third and three more in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead the Wildcats did not relinquish.

Loos, Jordan King and Kati Williams, WSC's 1-2-3 hitters, combined for six hits – two apiece – and scored five runs to pace the Wildcats. Sara Scheffert earned the win with five innings, allowing just three MSU hits.

Cygan was the only multi-hit player for Minot State as she went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Lorimor took the loss in game 1, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs, but struck out six batters.

Minot State moves on to No. 18 ranked Augustana College to complete a six-game road swing to start the NSIC season, playing two at Augie Sunday starting at Noon.
