MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University soccer team won its ninth-straight game on Saturday afternoon against Winona State 2-1 to improve its record against the Warriors to 5-2.
The Beavers offensive leader,
Ninfa Ramirez, scored quickly in the game just six minutes and 40 seconds after the game began. Ramirez headed the ball into the net off of a long pass from
Ashley Franco who received it from
Chloe Melton. The assists marked Franco's fourth of the year and Melton's sixth.
"Scoring early is a way to set the tone," Ramirez said. "We wanted to score early and then there wouldn't be as much pressure throughout the rest of the game."
Ramirez scored again at the 32-minute mark for her 15th goal of the season, just one shy of her school record 16 she scored last year. Ramirez's second goal was assisted by
Kelli Creese for her first assist of the year.
Winona State scored with just nine seconds left in the game. It was the first goal allowed by the MSU defense in 613 minutes. Head coach
Jason Spain was a bit disappointed in his team saying they let up as the game went on.
"It wasn't our best game, but we got three points," Spain said "It was a little uninspiring, but we're 9-0 and have six more to go."
Minot State will host Upper Iowa tomorrow, October 16, at Herb Parker Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
