First-place Beavers face another split week

MATCHUPS: Minot State will visit Minnesota Duluth on Friday, October 7 at 6 p.m. and host St. Cloud State on Sunday, October 9 at 1 p.m.

RECORDS: The Beavers continued their hot start in conference play beating both Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls to improve their record to 7-1, 5-0 NSIC. Both the Bulldogs and Huskies beat Winona State and lost to Upper Iowa last week. UMD is 5-3-2, 3-2-2 in the NSIC while SCSU is 5-3-2, 4-1-2 NSIC.

COACHES CORNER: Jason Spain is in his seventh season as head coach of the women's soccer program at Minot State. Spain has done impressive work in his five seasons with the team, sporting a highly successful 68-39-12 record. Greg Cane is one of the more experienced coaches in the NCAA as he is in his 23rd year with Minnesota Duluth. Over those 22 years he has led his team to a 233-139-36 record. Gretta Arvesen is in her third season with St. Cloud State. The Huskies have a record of 15-17-4 in her two seasons.

RANKINGS: Minot State earned its highest ranking in program history, and the highest Division II ranking in school history this week when it was voted the No. 13 team in the country in the October 4 NSCAA Coaches poll. Neither of this week's opponents received votes.

SERIES HISTORY: Minot State holds a 3-1 record against Minnesota Duluth in a series dating back to 2012 and a 3-2 record against St. Cloud State in a series dating back to 2010.

NOTING THE BEAVERS: After its two wins last week Minot State remains undefeated in conference play and hold a two-point lead in the new NSIC standings based on points. The Beavers will look to keep up their undefeated streak in their seventh and eighth conference games of 2016. Last season MSU started off 7-0 in NSIC play before tying at Minnesota State. That 7-0 start was the best conference start in school history.

NOTING THE BULLDOGS: The Beavers will be facing a tough defense on Friday at Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs rank fifth in goals against average (1.05) in the NSIC as well as third in the conference in shutouts (4). They also have forced opponents into tough spots on their offensive end. The Bulldogs have taken 52 corner kicks this season in 10 games, one of just two teams to have taken more than 50 corner kicks.

NOTING THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud State sits around the middle of every statistic in the NSIC rankings, but have used teamwork as well as anyone this season as they have assisted on 12 goals this year. With 1.2 assists per game the Huskies trail just three other teams. SCSU is led by Maria Kass who has scored six goals so far this season (4th in the NSIC) and recorded three assists (7th in the NSIC) as well.

CHASING RECORDS: Ninfa Ramirez broke the career goals record last week with a total of 27 and is still working towards the career points record as she is nine points behind former standout Zoe Fisher. Fellow senior Chloe Melton is also currently in the top 10 in career points, goals and assists. Sophomore Ashley Franco and junior Maritssa Perez is also in the top five for career assists with five apiece.
