A LOOK AT THE WEEK: Minot State will travel to Dickinson State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead on Wednesday, February 10 and Friday, February 12, respectively. Both competitions are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
RECORDS: The Beavers are 4-11 after dropping their two road duals last weekend at Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State. Dickinson State is 2-2 this season and is coming off of a win against the University of Jamestown. Minnesota State Moorhead is 6-6 and earned its first conference win last week against Northern State.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Evan Forde is in his first season at the helm of the wrestling team. He is the eighth coach in MSU history and the second coach since the reinstatement of the team and the move to NCAA Division II. Forde comes to Minot State after spending last season with fellow NSIC member Minnesota State University Moorhead where he competed as a wrestler from 2006-11. Before returning to his alma mater, Forde was an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State, also a Northern Sun member, for three seasons. As a college athlete he compiled 63 wins and earned NCAA Division II Academic All-American honors four times. Justin Schlecht is in his first year as the head coach of Dickinson State. Prior to being named the head coach, Schlecht was an assistant for the Blue Hawks for four years. As a member of the DSU wrestling team, Schlecht earned three national championships and one third place finish. He was named the NWCA Wrestler of the Year in 2007 and 2008. With an overall record of 140-22 as a college athlete he was 17-1 in four national tournament appearances. Kris Nelson is in his seventh season as the head coach for Minnesota State Moorhead. The former national champ and three-time All-American at North Dakota State has coached three All-Americans himself. Nelson led the Dragons to an 8-5 record last season including a 4-4 conference record.
RANKINGS: Minot State was not ranked in any national rankings. Dickinson State is the No. 16 NAIA team in the country according to intermatwrestle.com. Minnesota State Moorhead did not make it to the ranks of the NCAA Coaches Poll, but did receive some votes in the d2wrestle.com poll.
ALL-TIME AT A GLANCE: The Beavers have yet to record wins against the Blue Hawks or Dragons since entering the NCAA Division II ranks in 2011. Minot State and Dickinson State competed once and have not competed since the 2011-12 season while Minnesota State Moorhead has a 4-0 lead on MSU.
LAST TIME OUT: Minot State lost 25-21 to Dickinson State in its first year competing in NCAA Division II. The Beavers won five of the nine matches each team competed in, but forfeited the 125 weight class and suffered a loss by pin in the heavyweight class. The Beavers lost to the Dragons 25-15 last season in their final dual of the season.
Tanner Crissler (141, So., Belcourt, N.D.),
Cody Haugen (149, So., Minot, N.D.)Â and
Mitchell Eull (HWT. Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) all won their matches.
NOTING THE BEAVERS: Minot State broke a seven-dual skid the last time they faced an NAIA school in Jamestown on January 26. Currently in a losing streak of three the Beavers will look to end another drought against Dickinson State. Traveling to MSU Moorhead will be the first of two final NSIC duals. The Beavers will attempt to get head coach
Evan Forde his first conference victory in those final two duals.
NOTING THE BLUE HAWKS: Dickinson State, the No. 16 NAIA team in the country will look to get its third win of the year when they host Minot State on Wednesday. The Blue Hawks are coming off a 29-20 win over Jamestown and a tournament competition at Briar Cliff. DSU has a total of five wrestlers in the top 10 rankings in the NAIA according to intermatwrestle.com including the No. 7 wrestler in the 197 weight class.
NOTING THE DRAGONS: With a 6-6 overall record Minnesota State Moorhead earned its first conference victory last week against Northern State 32-8. The Dragons received votes in the January 28 d2wrestle.com poll and had one wrestler ranked in the top of his weight class. Blake Bosch, a 133-pound competitor, is the No. 2 ranked wrestler in his class and the top ranked NSIC wrestler.
HART'S ON FIRE: True freshman
Hunter Hart (197, Gallatin Gateway, Mont.) earned one of the two Beaver victories last week against Southwest Minnesota State University recording his first career collegiate pin. The pin came in just 48 seconds and was the fourth quickest pin for MSU so far this season. This was just Hart's eighth match of the season and his career. Hart's record now stands at 3-5.
EULL BE THERE: Junior heavyweight
Mitchell Eull (Buffalo, Minn.) has had a successful season so far in the 2015-16 season. Already with a career-high in team points earned and close to tying his career-high in pins, Eull has been able to be a reliable standard in the Minot State lineup. He will be looking to get back on top after dropping both matches last week by a total of eight combined points.
Eull in his three seasons (2013-2016)Year | Wins | Losses | Falls | Points |
2013-14 | 11 | 22 | 2 | 13 |
2014-15 | 26 | 15 | 6 | 42 |
2015-16 | 18 | 9 | 5 | 43 |
Total | 55 | 46 | 13 | 98 |
SUN DOESN'T SHINE: In six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference duals the Beavers have failed to score more than 10 points and have twice been shut out resulting in their 0-6 conference record. Minot State still has a shot to match its conference record of 2-6 it hit last year if it wins its final two duals, the first coming this week against Minnesota State Moorhead. The Beavers did defeat a member of its conference in a home dual against Mary in a nonconference competition.
BY THE NUMBERS2: Team victories, and zero losses the Beavers have obtained over schools not affiliated with the NCAA. Dickinson State is a member of the NAIA.
