MINOT, N.D. – Despite hitting six home runs in two games on Wednesday the Minot State University baseball team could not come back from the deficits set by Bemidji State.
In game one, BSU scored the first three runs of the game in the third inning. MSU hit two home runs in the following inning with
Celestino Rodriguez (1B, Fr., Crystal Lake, Ill.) hitting his 10th of the year and
Taylor Williamson (3B, Jr., Creswell, Ore.) hitting his fourth.
Bemidji State would tack on another run in the seventh inning of the game to win with a final score of 4-2.
Kendal Daniels (Jr., Regina, Saskatchewan) pitched 6.1 innings for the home team Beavers giving up the four runs, while striking out four batters.
"Kendal threw well, he did a good job today," said head coach
Brock Weppler. "He had that three-run inning, but other than that he was very good. He kept his pitch count down and came just short of throwing a complete game. That's all you can ask of your pitchers."
In game two, BSU went up 2-0 early in the top of the first. Minot State responded with its third solo shot homer of the day, this one from
Jordan Schulz (OF, Jr., Strasbourg, Saskatchewan). MSU would hit two more solo shots in the fifth and sixth inning before bringing in their first runs off a base hit that didn't go over the fence.
At that point the MSU Beavers trailed 7-4 and would find themselves into an even deeper hole in when they came up to bat in the eighth inning. With a one-run seventh inning and a five-run eighth inning, Bemidji State held a 13-4 lead with just six outs left for Minot State to comeback.
In the eighth inning, MSU found many ways to bring in a total of eight runs to move the BSU lead to just one run. With the bases loaded their first run of the inning came from a single, followed by advancing runners on a hit by pitch, then a sacrifice fly and another single. Schulz brought in two runs on a double and scored himself off a Rodriguez single to center field.
The Beavers couldn't complete the comeback though as the Bemidji State outscored them 5-1 in the final inning to win 18-13.
Minot State will play four games this weekend at Northern State on Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, with both doubleheaders set to begin at 12 p.m.
