Lewis Nets Golden Goal for Beavers

MINOT, N.D. – Freshman Sofia Lewis scored the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in overtime lifting the Minot State women's soccer team to a 1-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Minnesota State Moorhead in the Beavers regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at Herb Parker Stadium.

Lewis took a cross from Haley Berryman and tapped the ball into the net from five yards out giving the Beavers the win. The goal was the NSIC-leading 12th goal of the season for Lewis and her total also ranks fourth in Minot State single-season history.

With the win, Minot State improved to 12-4-2 overall and finished the NSIC schedule with an 11-3-1 record. The Beavers earned the fourth seed in the upcoming NSIC Tournament and will host Mary on Wednesday (Nov. 1) at 5 p.m. in Herb Parker Stadium.

The victory kept Minot State unbeaten in its last 10 matches, which is tied with the 2015 team for the second-longest streak in school history. The 2016 team went unbeaten in 16 consecutive matches before losing in the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament.

Sophomore goalie Erin Rafferty made two saves and pushed her school record single-season shutout record to nine.

Minot State dominated the second period as the Beavers outshot the Dragons by a 10-3 margin. The Beavers carried that momentum into the extra time as Minot State held a 3-0 advantage in shots in the overtime period.

Minnesota State Moorhead finished its season with a 1-13-1 overall record and a 1-12-2 mark in the NSIC.

Sunday also marked Senior Day for the Beavers as Kelli Creese, Maritssa Perez and Kellie Piazza each played their final regular season home matches at Herb Parker Stadium.

Minot State will be chasing more school history in the postseason as the Beavers have scored 41 goals this season, which trails only the 45 goals scored by the 2016 team. MSU has also allowed only 10 goals this year, while the fewest goals in a season is 13 held by the 2016 team.

In addition to Minot State hosting Mary on Wednesday, No. 8 Minnesota Duluth will face No. 1 seed Minnesota State at 1 p.m., No. 7 Winona State will travel to No. 2 Bemidji State for a 1:30 p.m. match and No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul will meet No. 3 Augustana at 3 p.m.

The semifinals will be played on Nov. 3 with the winner of the Winona State/Bemidji State match facing the winner of the Concordia-St. Paul/Augustana match. The other semifinal will feature the winner of the Minnesota Duluth/Minnesota State match against the winner of the Minot State/Mary match.

The championship match will be played on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at a site to be determined.
