Beavers sweep two on final day of invite

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University gave its pitching staff plenty of run support on day two.

The Beavers finished with 14 runs to back up two fine pitching performances winning 8-1 over Black Hills State and 6-2 over Minnesota State University Moorhead Friday on the final day of the Minot State Invite at the Presentation Dome.

"Today was a good day," said MSU head coach Bill Triplett. "We earned two convincing wins and had contributions from just about everyone. Our pitchers were very good, in fact (Jenn) Spencer only gave up one hit in her six innings of work. (Emma) Casey and (Clarissa) Ramirez were good as well."

Spencer, Ramirez and Casey combined to give up just eight hits over the two games. Spencer picked up the win in game 1, while Ramirez was the winner in game 2. Casey pitched five innings total and gave up just five hits and two unearned runs.

In game 1, MSU erased any bad thoughts from a 1-0 shutout loss Thursday to BHSU with a six run first inning. Skyla Neubauer hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first to help the Beavers push out to a big lead.

"We got some power out of Neubauer, (Rachel) Burdette and (Ashley) Hill and our speed on the bases was key as well," Triplett said. "It's always feels good when you win two."

Hill finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Lauren Cowden added two hits and drove in a run for MSU. Spencer cruised after giving up an unearned run in the top of the first to improve to 2-3 on the season.

BHSU's Morgan Smith had one of the two Yellow Jacket (2-5) hits and stole two bases.

Against MSU Moorhead, the Beavers again jumped out early as Minot State scored three in the bottom of the first and two more in the third. Burdette and Hill each hit home runs, while Neubauer and Tori Zimmermann had doubles for the Beavers.

Emma Dummer and Aunica Novacek both finished with two hits to pace MSUM (1-3).

Burdette went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Zimmermann, Neubauer and Jordan Grant all collected two hits for the Beavers.

Ramirez gave up just two hits and no runs to earn the win evening her record at 2-2.
