MSU splits final day at Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – Minot State University's Trevaun Smith went 4-for-4 with four extra base hits and Just Demary pitched six strong innings to lift MSU to a 9-5 win in game 1 and earn a split of two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball games with Wayne State Sunday at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.

The Beavers finally ran out of pitching gas in game 2, falling 15-1 in seven innings.

"Overall, it was a good day. We came out in game 1 and sealed the series," said MSU head coach Scott Eul. "We swung the bat well and pitched it well. We were a little flat in the last game, but overall it was a great weekend for us."

In game 1, MSU (6-3 overall, 3-1 NSIC) scored at least one run in all but one inning and put up a pair of runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to pull away for the team's sixth win of the season. After trailing 2-1 in the second, MSU responded with two in the second, one in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a lead they did not relinquish.

Smith was a big part of that. The redshirt freshman, batting out of the nine hole, finished with three doubles and a triple, driving in a pair of runs and scoring two.

"Tre was a bench guy coming into the season but has worked his way into a nice roll for us. He has produced," said Eul. "He hasn't wasted an at bat all year and has played pretty good defense. If he continues to do that, he's going to have a nice year."

He was one of three MSU players with multi-hit games. Jordan Schulz went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Wyatt Schlosser went 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored two runs.

Demary didn't have shutdown stuff, giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings, but allowed just one multi-run inning, limiting the damage as his offense built a commanding lead. He moved to 2-1 on the season with the win.

"Demary pitched it well. He was ready to go," Eul said.

Cody Jenkins finished with three hits and drove in two, while David Janes also knocked in two for WSC (5-9, 1-3). A Breedlove suffered the loss, going 4 2/3 innings giving up 10 hits and five runs.

While MSU was able limit WSC to small innings in game 1, the Wildcats turned that around in game 2 scoring three runs in the first, second and fifth innings and putting the game away with a five-run seventh. All four MSU pitchers who entered the game finished with a lead one run allowed. Kendal Daniels suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season.

Kyle Williamson was the only MSU player with more than one hit as he finished with two of the team's four total.

His leadoff counterpart Tandon Dorn finished with four hits, four runs and four RBIs in the win for Wayne State. Teague McFadden pitched all seven to improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Beavers will step out of conference play for a double header against Dickinson State Wednesday.
