Sylvester's gem lifts Beavers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minot State University started the day slow in game 1 against Wayne State College but salvaged the day behind Jeremy Sylvester's gem in game 2 shutting out Concordia St. Paul at US Bank Stadium.

"Jeremy was dialed in from pitch number one," said MSU head coach Scott Eul. "He was keeping guys off balance all game and was able to produce a lot of soft contact.  Big time players step up in big situations and Sylvester was able to get us the split today."

The Beavers (2-2 overall) collected nine extra base hits on the day while Sylvester allowed only five hits in 8 1/3 innings and striking out five CSP batters to earn his second win of the season,

"We had a better sense of urgency in the second game today," Eul said. "We played a little faster and a little cleaner. We need to find a way to do that for two games a day and we will be in a good spot."

In game 2 against CSP, MSU took an early lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Michael Borst scoring Jordan Schulz.

That was all they needed as the senior Sylvester slammed the door on CSP earning his second win of the season.

Trevaun Smith collected his first collegiate hit and RBI, smoking a triple to the right center gap scoring Justin Demary to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Kyle Williamson then doubled to score Smith to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. MSU scored one more insurance run in the ninth when Borst and Celestino Rodriguez hit back to back doubles.

"We faced a pretty good team and a real good pitcher today in Concordia," said Eul. "I think we outplayed them in every aspect which is good to see. Now just need to stress to the guys about getting that team every outing. Okay teams occasionally play well, good teams play well more often than not and the great teams show that every time they step between the lines. We don't want to be just an okay or a good team so we need to start bringing this attitude every game and we will be right in the mix of things."

Borst led the Beavers in game 2 with four hits, while five other beavers collected one hit each. He finished the day with seven hits, two doubles and two RBIs.

In game one, the Beavers fell behind in the fifth inning after WSC's Bodie Cooper hit a three-run home run and couldn't quite pull off the comeback. Schulz answered that three-run homer with a sac fly scoring Alp in the bottom of the fifth. WSC scored one in the seventh and five in the ninth. MSU answered both times but it wasn't enough as the Beavers fell 9-4.

"Tanner (Alexander) threw the ball pretty well again for us today," Eul said. "We had a couple defensive mishaps that forced him to throw a few extra pitches and ultimately the homer to Cooper, but for the most part he kept us in the game.
"We let the wheels fall off a bit the last couple innings. We need to find a way to put a stop to those to give ourselves a chance to make a run at it late in the game."

Borst led the Beavers with three hits, while Alp and Schulz collected two hits apiece.

The Beavers finish off the road trip to US Bank Stadium Friday with a single game against Winona State.
