Bats come alive in sweep

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University smashed 20 hits and scored 16 runs in game 2 to put together a sweep of a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball games against the University of Sioux Falls Thursday at Corbett Field.

The Beavers (18-12 overall, 13-9 NSIC) only got two hits, but both were home run in game 1 to start the day with a 5-4 win. MSU put an exclamation point on the day with a 16-10, 3 hour marathon in game 2.

"It was good to see us come out in the second game and really battle," said MSU head coach Scott Eul. "We put together good at bats 1-9 in the order."

In game 1, Minot State has mustered single hits off USF starter Zachary Miller (2-3) in the second and third innings, but both were opposite-field homers. Jarrod Adams cranked his third home run on the season after Wyatt Schlosser earned a walk to give MSU a 2-1 lead.

In the third, it was Michael Borst's turn. Borst hit his fifth HR, a three run shot scoring Jordan Schulz and Sean Alp who both walked, for a 5-1 lead.

Minot State starter Tanner Alexander ran into some trouble in the sixth as he gave up three runs – all unearned – as USF cut the lead to 5-4, but shut the door in the seventh to earn his fourth win. Alexander gave up six hits, four runs with just one earned, and struck out five batters in his second complete game in a row.

In game 2, both teams took advantage of poor fielding from one another and a gusty wind blowing out to right to combine for 26 runs, 35 hits and seven errors.

USF (12-20, 9-13) hit two home runs in the game, one each by Rob Johnson, a two-run shot right over the right field foul pole, and Austin Richey, who hit his first of the season to right during a five-run fifth.

But the Beavers countered with Borst lifting a towering fly ball that just got out to break a 7-7 tie and start a six-run sixth that powered the Beavers to the win. Borst finished with four RBIs in the game, seven in the series, and now has 43 on the season.

"We kept plugging away," Eul said. "We got two good pitching performances in the second game as both Breshears (Brock Breshears) and Roach (Dylan Roach) had good outings."

Roach worked four innings in relief to pick up the win, improving to 2-0 on the season. He gave up four hits and three runs with just one earned in his four innings. Breshears gave up 11 hits and seven runs, but just two of those were earned in a no decision.

The Beavers had six players with multi-hit games including a 4-for-5 performance from Alp. Alp finished with a triple, four RBIs and four runs scored. Borst, Schlosser, Celestino Rodriguez and Kyle Williamson all finished with three hits and Schulz had two. Schulz drove in three and Rodriguez two in the win.

Minot State will look to lock down its fourth series win and is looking for its first series sweep as they play host to USF for two more Friday starting at 12/2:30 p.m.
