MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University rolled to a 16-0 win over the University of Mary in game 1, but couldn't complete the sweep, falling 5-3 in the nightcap in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball Saturday at Corbett Field.

The Beavers (23-19 overall, 18-16 NSIC) belted 18 hits in game 1, finishing with six doubles and a home run. But, the Marauders (12-33, 8-28) held MSU to just eight hits and three runs in game 2 for the split. The two teams will take to Corbett Field again Sunday to finish off MSU's home schedule.

"I hate to sound like a broken record, but that's been the story of our season," MSU head coach Scott Eul said. "We came out flat in game 2 and if we play like that we will get beat by the worst team in the conference."

In game 1, MSU turned the ball over to senior Kendal Daniels who, on short rest after pitching against St. Cloud State midweek, responded. Daniels tossed 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball, scattering three hits and striking out six to improve to 2-5.

"He came out and battled," Eul said of Daniels. "It was senior day and he's a senior and he did what he had to do. It's great to see. He threw strikes and attacked and competed for us. (Dominic) Selmi got in and threw some pitches as well. We did a good job on the mound in game 1."

MSU scored at least three runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings including a five-run fifth to blow out the Marauders. Sean Alp went 4 for 4, scoring five runs and knocking in one with a solo home run, his third of the year. Wyatt Schlosser drove in four, going 3 for 5 at the plate and Justin Demary drove in two going 2 for 3. In all, MSU had five players with multi-hit games and 10 players had at least one hit.

"We came out ready to play in the first game," Eul said.

In game 2, MSU struggled to put together scoring rallies.

The Beavers outhit UM 8-5, but left 10 runners on base including the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. MSU scored single runs in the third, fifth and eighth innings.

MSU pitched the ball well enough to win as Brock Breshears and Wyatt Moore combined for a five-hitter, but Breshears allowed four runs in three innings to fall to 0-3. Moore was solid in relief, allowing a run in the seventh and just two hits in six innings of relief work.

The MSU duo was out-pitched by U-Mary starter Nicholas Stobbe who went the distance, allowing eight hits and three runs to improve to 4-4 on the season.

Demary and Trevaun Smith each finished with two hits for the Beavers. Michael Borst and Celestino Rodriguez drove in runs.

MSU continues to hold down the sixth spot in the league, just a game back of fifth-place Minnesota Duluth and 3.5 game ahead of ninth-place Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers are looking to lock down their first NSIC Tournament bid since joining the league.

The Beavers will finish off the home regular season scheduled with two against UM Sunday (12/2 p.m.).
