Beavers outlast UIU, win sixth NSIC series

FAYETTE, Iowa – Minot State University needed 12 innings in game 2, but the Beavers outlasted Upper Iowa to win the marathon 7-6 and capture its sixth series of the season, sweeping the Peacocks in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball Saturday at Robertson Woods Field.

"We had a good day today," said MSU head coach Scott Eul. "We threw it really well and swung it pretty well too. The second game put us in a spot and some situations where we shouldn't be, but we battled and came out on top."

The Beavers (28-20 overall, 23-17 NSIC) clinched fifth place in the league – the program's highest finish since joining the NSIC – and will take on No. 4 seed Wayne State College in the first round of the NSIC Tournament Wednesday in St. Cloud, Minn.

"We are in the conference tournament now and are in a pretty good spot," Eul said.

MSU built a 4-0 lead after three innings and a 6-3 advantage after six, but Upper Iowa (19-29, 15-25) scored one in the eighth and two in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

After neither team scored in the first two extra frames, MSU manufactured the game winner in the 12th. Sean Alp led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Williamson. UIU intentionally walked Jordan Schulz, but both Alp and Schulz moved up on a wild pitch. Trevaun Smith made the Peacocks pay with a single through the left side to score Alp.

The run lifted Minot State reliever Wyatt Moore to the win. Moore was outstanding in relief, allowing just two hits and no runs in 3.2 innings pitched. He moved to 2-0 on the season.

"Wyatt threw really well for us today," added Eul.

Schulz, Williamson, Jarrod Adams and Celestino Rodriguez all finished with two hits for the Beavers. Wyatt Schlosser and Geordie McDougall both knocked in two runs and Schulz and McDougall finished with doubles.

In game 1, MSU broke open the game with five runs in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to run away with a 10-1 win. The Beavers had four players with multi-hit games as Schulz, Alp, Rodrigues and Justin Demary all finished with two hits.

Schulz and Rodriguez drove in three runs each and Adams plated two. In all, MSU seven of its started finish with at least one hit.

The run support was more than enough for starter Kendal Daniels. Daniels tossed five innings of seven-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out four to improve to 3-5 on the season.

The Beavers will make their debut in the NSIC tournament Wednesday as they take on WSC in Game 2 of the tournament starting at 12:30 p.m. at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.
