MINOT, N.D. --
Ashley Hill and
Tori Zimmermann homered in game one and
Kyla Larson had two hits and
Aubry Johnson had an RBI in game two as they celebrated Senior Day with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of Upper Iowa on Sunday at the South Hill Softball Complex. The Beavers won the opener 6-3 and completed the sweep with a dramatic 6-5 win in game two.
All four seniors were honored prior to the start of the doubleheader and each contributed to the two wins on Sunday.
Zimmermann went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run in game one, while Hill was 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI in game one. Larson was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the second game, while Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the tying run of the second game.
It was a wild ending to game two as
Haley Hernandez had an unusual walk-off single to win it for the Beavers. Following the walk to Johnson, Hernandez turned away from an inside pitch and the ball struck the knob of the bat and rolled out to the mound. Upper Iowa pitcher Jaclyn Thompson was slow to react and
Isis Cabral streaked in from third with the winning run.
With the sweep, Minot State improved to 23-18 overall and 10-10 in the NSIC, while Upper Iowa fell to 18-20 overall and 5-13 in conference play.
Upper Iowa took a 1-0 lead three batters into the first game, but the Beavers tied the game when
Julia Suchan singled to left scoring
Lauren Cowden to knot the game at 1-1.
Minot State took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning when Hill launched her third homer of the season putting the Beavers ahead 2-1.
The Beavers upped the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning by virtue of a RBI double by Cabral that scored Zimmermann.
After Upper Iowa trimmed the lead to 3-2 with a run in the fourth inning the Beavers responded with a run of their own when Zimmermann tripled to bring home Suchan who had singled.
The Peacocks climbed to within 4-3 with a single run in the fifth inning, but Zimmermann blasted a two-run shot to left in the sixth inning to push the lead to 6-3.
Laura Mendez went the distance in the circle for the Beavers as she allowed seven hits, three earned runs and struck out one to earn the victory.
Upper Iowa held a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game before the Beavers got a run back on a RBI double by Hill that scored Cabral to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Peacocks then scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to take a seemingly safe 5-1 lead.
Minot State scored a run in the sixth inning when Hernandez doubled to right scoring Cabral, but still trailed by 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lauren Cowden walked and stole second base to lead off the second inning and advanced to third when Suchan singled to center. Following a pitching change, Suchan stole second base and Zimmermann came to the plate as the potential tying run. She laced a ball to deep leftfield, but Sami Kay Shafranski made an outstanding catch preventing extra bases for Zimmerman. Cowden came home to score on Zimmermann's sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-3.
Larson singled to center advancing Suchan to third base and she moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Cabral singled to center bringing home Suchan and advancing Larson to third base to cut the lead to 5-4.
Thompson returned to the circle for the Peacocks and Hill drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases. Johnson then drew a free pass to score Larson with the tying run setting the stage for the heroics of Hernandez.
Minot State concludes the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday (April 25) when it hosts Northern State in a NSICÂ doubleheader at the South Hill Softball Complex.
