SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --
Ashley Hill drove in two runs and
Tori Zimmermann and
Lauren Cowden each had two hits, but Minot State's 2018 season came to an end on Thursday in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament as the Beavers lost to Sioux Falls 8-6 in Sherman Park.
Minot State, which ended its season with a 25-24 overall record, jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off the Cougars in the loser-out game of the tournament.
Hill was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Zimmermann finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and Cowden was 2-for-4.
Kyla Larson and
Isis Cabral also had base hits for the Beavers.
Sioux Falls, which improved to 31-18, banged out 15 hits in the game and six players registered two hits for the Cougars.
Minot State came out blazing in the top of the first inning and took a 4-0 lead.
Cowden singled to lead off the game and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Julia Suchan. Zimmermann then ripped a double that brought home Cowden and gave the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
After a groundout, Cabral walked and
Aubry Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Zimmermann with Minot State's second run and Hill capped the inning with a two-run single giving Minot State a 4-0 lead.
Sioux Falls rallied to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning and three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Zimmermann ignited a Beaver rally in the top of the third inning with a leadoff single. A sacrifice bunt by Larson moved Zimmermann to second base and Cabral followed with a single putting runners on the corner with one out. Johnson cashed in the opportunity as she lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Zimmermann and put the Beavers back in front 5-4.
Sioux Falls answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 5-5. The Cougars took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Minot State got a run back in the top of the fifth inning when Larson blasted her seventh home run of the season to trim the lead to 7-6, but that would be as close as the Beavers would get.
Zimmermann, Larson, Hill and Johnson all played their final games in a Minot State uniform on Thursday.
