(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State wrestling team hosted top-ranked St. Cloud State in dual action tonight.
The Huskies proved their national ranking in a dominating win over MSU. The dual results are listed below.
Dual Results
125: Dean Arevalo (MSU) def. Brandon Betancourt (SCSU) by decision, 7-3
Arevalo, the 6
th-ranked 125-pounder, battled Betancourt through a scrappy first period. Dean drew first blood with a two-point reversal and a takedown in the second period. Arevalo worked his way to another takedown in the third period and garnered Minot State's only win of the night.
133: Garrett Vos (SCSU) def. Oscar Nellis (MSU) by major decision, 12-3.
Garrett Vos, the No. 2 133-pound wrestler in the country, struck first versus Nellis with an early takedown. Nellis managed an escape in the second period to get on the board. The third period, though, was dominated by Vos as he earned the major decision victory.
141: Garrett Aldrich (SCSU) def. Marco Ramirezlazos (MSU) by injury forfeit.
In the quickest match of the night, Ramirezlazos was forced to withdraw from competition due to injury. Aldrich held a 2-0 lead at the time of forfeit.
149: James Pleski (SCSU) def. Shadi Mitwalli (MSU) by decision, 1-0.
Mitwalli continued to wrestle well as he pushed the highly-ranked Pleski to the brink. Shadi narrowly missed a takedown in the first period. Pleski outlasted Mitwalli while maintain the slight advantage of 1-0 and claimed the victory.
157: Jake Barzowski (SCSU) def. Zach Berry (MSU) by major decision, 16-3.
Berry could not keep up with the nation's top 157-pounder. Barzowski scored first with a takedown in the first period. He added another takedown and a four-point near-fall in that frame to cruise to an easy win.
165: Devin Fitzpatrick (SCSU) def. Nathan Baca (MSU) by decision, 8-3.
Fitzpatrick started the scoring with a takedown in the first period and continued to score while limiting Baca's offensive attack. Baca's attempt at a comeback with a late takedown was too little, too late, though, as Fitzpatrick earned the victory by decision.
174: Kolten Eischens (SCSU) def. Joey Lopez (MSU) by fall.
Lopez began the match's scoring with a takedown in the first period. Eischens countered with an escape and takedown of his own. Eischens then made quick work of the redshirt freshman and pinned Lopez to win.
184: Tyree Overton (SCSU) def. Noe Garcia (MSU) by fall.
In Garcia's debut match as a Beaver, the contest remained scoreless throughout most of the first period. Overton then controlled Garcia with a takedown and eventual pin for the second-consecutive win via fall for St. Cloud State.
197: Noah Ryan (SCSU) def. Je-Mario Jones (MSU) by major decision, 10-0.
Ryan began the match with a first-period takedown and was awarded another point at the end of the first from an MSU stalling penalty. The redshirt sophomore Husky grappler overpowered Jones for the wire-to-wire victory.
285: Ezayah Oropeza (SCSU) def. Jordan Will (MSU) by decision, 7-3.
The heavyweight match featured the 8
th-ranked (Will) and 9
th-ranked (Oropeza) wrestlers. Will began the scoring with a two-point takedown in the first period. The match was tied up with a Will escape midway through the second period and remained that way. Oropeza notched a reversal early in the third period to take the lead. The Beavers' heavyweight could not retaliate and Oropeza held on to win.
The Beaver wrestlers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Minnesota State Mavericks at 2:00 p.m. in the MSU Dome.
