(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State wrestling team lost their third-consecutive NSIC dual this evening to the visiting Northern State Wolves by a final score of 29-12.
The Beavers and Wolves were tied at 23
rd in the latest national poll.
Team Results
125: Dean Arevalo (MSU) def. Landen Fisher (NSU) by decision, 6-1.
Arevalo, one of three Minot State seniors honored on Senior Night, wrestled an even match with Fisher at 125 pounds. Arevalo began the scoring with a reversal in the second and extended the lead with two takedowns in the third before winning the match.
133: Dayne Morton (NSU) def. Oscar Nellis (MSU) by fall.
Morton recorded a takedown in the first period to set the tone of the match and quickly extended the lead in the second before pinning Nellis to win.
141: Kenny Jones (NSU) def. Lincoln Stormer (MSU) by maj. decision, 16-3.
Stormer and Jones traded takedowns in the first period and the Wolves 141-pounder widened the margin in the second period. Jones led from start to finish and added to Northern State's team score with the major decision victory.
149: Caden Moore (NSU) def. Shadi Mitwalli (MSU) by fall.
Moore had two early takedowns and led 2-1 before pinning Mitwalli.
157: Zach Berry (MSU) def. Walker Carr (NSU) by sudden victory, 4-2 (2OT).
In the most entertaining match of the night, Berry and Carr grappled through a scoreless first period. Berry struck first on the scoreboard with an escape in the second and Carr answered with an espace of his own. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation. Berry managed an escape in the first tiebreaker and Carr retaliated again. Then, in the second overtime period, the Beaver senior recorded another takedown to capture the sudden victory win.
165: James Burks (NSU) def. Nathan Baca (MSU) by decision, 14-11.
Burks and Baca traded takedowns before the Beavers' 165-pounder recorded a four-point near fall. Burks regained the lead, though, in the second period and held on to win.
174: Tanner Wiese (NSU) def. Joey Lopez (MSU) by sudden victory, 3-1 (OT).
Wiese and Lopez wrestled through a scoreless first period. Each wrestler scored on escapes in the first and second periods and ended regulation knotted at one. Wiese took Lopez to the mat in the first overtime to win by sudden victory.
184: Marcus Placide (NSU) def. Noe Garcia (MSU) by decision, 10-5.
Placide made an early takedown to start scoring but Garcia answered with an escape. Garcia captured the lead in the late stages of the second period with a powerful takedown as time expired the frame. Placide tied the score with one-minute remaining in regulation and nearly pinned Garcia late in the third period to seal the win.
197: Diego Gallegos (NSU) def. Dustin Swisher (MSU) by maj. decision 15-5.
Gallegos started scoring with two takedowns in the first period. Diego's persistent attack built a wide margin that was too much for Swisher to come back from.
285: Jordan Will (MSU) def. Caleb Lefferdink (NSU) by forfeit.
Will captured the victory and earned six team points by forfeit.
The Beavers will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 7 at Southwest Minnesota State. The remainder of Minot State's contests will be on the road in 2020.
