Minot State Softball Sweeps Day Two of Desert Stinger

Las Vegas, Nev. – The Minot State Beavers were able to sweep day two of the Desert Stinger, defeating Oklahoma Baptist, and Sonoma State. The Beavers head into day three with a chance to come home above .500.
 
Game One:
 
The Minot State Beavers took a 4-2 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to an 11-3 victory over the Oklahoma Baptist Bison on Saturday.
 
Sophomore Zoya Robbins (1-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (1-2). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out one.
 
Senior Isis Cabral led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior Julia Suchan put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Robbins also helped out for Minot State, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the first inning.  Minot State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run double off the bat of Suchan.
 
The Bison then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-3 until the Beavers expanded their advantage in the third. Senior Karlee Coughlin came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Beavers.
 
Minot State kept Oklahoma Baptist without a run before building their lead to 11-3 in the fifth inning. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Robbins. The score remained 11-3 for the rest of the game, as Minot State coasted to the win.
 
GAME NOTES
» Minot State's highest-scoring inning was the fifth when it pushed six runs across.
» Minot State grabbed a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the first and held that advantage the remainder of the game.
» Four Beavers had multiple hits in the ballgame.

Game Two:

It was a tough day for Sonoma State pitchers, as the Minot State Beavers racked up ten runs en route to a mammoth 10-8 win over the Seawolves on Saturday.
 
Senior Karlee Coughlin (1-0) got the win for Minot State (2-2). The right-hander went three innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Freshman Roxanne Ines also pitched well, going 1.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit.
 
At the plate, the Beavers were led by sophomore Jamie Odlum, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI while walking once. Coughlin put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI while finding her way aboard once via a walk. Sophomore Kiera Shwaluk also helped out for Minot State, going 2-for-5.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning.
 
The Beavers lost the lead they built in the third but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 4-3. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by freshman Lauryn DeGuzman's single, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Beavers.
 
Sonoma State fought back to even the ballgame at five before Minot State re-claimed a 7-5 advantage in the eighth inning. Odlum's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Beavers.
 
The Seawolves then evened up the game at seven before Minot State fought back to re-take their advantage in the ninth inning, bringing the score to 10-7 in favor of Minot State. Sonoma State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Beavers still held on for the 10-8 win.
