Beaver Softball Sweeps First Night of Dome Invite

(MINOT, N.D.) – The Beaver softball team swept two games in the first night of their third Air-Supported Dome Invitational.
 
Minot State defeated NAIA opponents Mayville State and Dickinson State by a combined 21-1.
 
Game 1 | Minot State 12, Mayville State 1
Cabral put together an outstanding performance at the plate Friday, hitting two home runs to help lead the Minot State Beavers past the Comets.
 
Sophomore Zoya Robbins (4-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (7-6). The right-hander went three shutout innings while giving up two hits, allowing one walk and striking out three. Freshman Roxanne Ines also made an impact in the circle for the Beavers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits.
 
Cabral went 4-for-4 at the plate, supplementing her two home runs with two doubles while driving in five runs and scoring three of her own. Sophomore Kiera Shwaluk added to Cabral's awesome power-hitting performance by going 1-for-1 with two RBIs along with two walks. Senior Julia Suchan also chipped in for the Beavers, going 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring in the first inning. Minot State scored twice, with one run coming across on Shwaluk's single.
 
Mayville State failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Suchan, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers.
 
Minot State held the Comets scoreless before expanding their lead to 8-0 the following inning.   The Beavers added three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run homer from Cabral.
 
Mayville gained ground, closing the gap to 8-1 until Minot State added some insurance in the fourth. The Beavers scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Cabral, bringing the score to 12-1 in favor of Minot State. The score remained 12-1 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.
 
GAME NOTES
» The Beavers got two home runs off the bat of Cabral.
» Cabral compiled four hits and drove in five runs on the day for Minot State.
» Minot State got a fantastic power hitting day from Cabral, who reached safely with four extra base hits.
» Minot State's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed four runs across.
» Minot State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Beavers out-hit the at an 11-5 clip.
» Freshman Lauryn DeGuzman stole three bases in Friday's game.

» Minot State went 8-for-16 (.500) with runners in scoring position.

Game 2 | Minot State 9, Dickinson State 0
 
Robbins and Coughlin combined to throw a shutout on Friday as the Minot State Beavers blanked the Blue Hawks of Dickinson State.
 
Robbins (5-2) started and picked up the win for Minot State (8-6), going two shutout innings while giving up three hits, walking none, and striking out two. Coughlin was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going four shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two.
 
Freshman Lauryn DeGuzman led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple, a walk and two RBIs. Coughlin furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Jamie Odlum also contributed, going 1-for-3 for Minot State with a triple and two RBIs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring for the first time in the inning.  
 
Minot State put up a three-spot, the big hit coming by way of a run-scoring double off the bat of Coughlin.
 
The Beavers then tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with their biggest output coming in the sixth when they scored three times. Two of those three runs scored on a two-run triple from DeGuzman.

» Junior Jaya Allen led the Blue Hawks' pitching staff, throwing five innings of six-run ball.
 
The Beavers will be back in action for two more games in the Air-Supported Dome tomorrow against Providence (Mont.) and Valley City State.
