Minot State tops Liberty in battle of top-ranked teams

MINOT, N.D. — Minot State (#4) came out on top of the Liberty University Flames (#3) in their Friday night match-up in the Maysa Arena.

The Beavers set the tone for the night when they captured and held the lead in the first period. Nick Doyle assisted Jared Hamm on the first score of the night, then Hamm decided to pay it forward and assist Landyn Cochrane on the next goal, putting MSU up 2-0 with just under three minutes remaining in the first. An LU goal in the last 0:53 seconds of the first period put some pressure on, making the score 2-1.

MSU stormed the ice ready to show the Flames who's really packing the heat to kick off the second period. Four goals whizzed into the LU net, all within five minutes of one another. Connor Navrot, Davis Sheldon, Wayde Johannesson, and Reid Arnoldwho shot the game-winning goal unassistedadded 4 more to the board and allowed Minot State a 6-1 lead over Liberty. The Flames didn't see another point until the last two minutes of that period, ending the second period at 6-2.

Competition was intense all night long. 0:52 seconds into the third period Liberty snuck a puck past MSU goalie, Jake Anthony, slicing the lead to 6-3.  The Flames never stepped off the gas but the Beavers were in control of the steering wheel.

The Beavers' stellar offense in the first two periods gave them the lead that they'd be holding onto the remainder of the night. A Flames' goal in the last three minutes of the game was enough to change the score, but not enough to come out on top, meaning the Beavers would be serving the Flames their first loss on the season. MSU defeated LU 6-4, giving the Flames a new record of 6-1-0 and upping the Beavers to a nice 4-0-0 start on the season.

The Beavers will look to finish the weekend with a sweep over the Flames. Both teams take the ice again tonight, Oct 16 at 7:30p.m. in the Maysa Arena.
