Offensive Explosion Leads Beaver Baseball to 14-6 Opening Day win over Northwest Missouri State

PITTSBURG, KAN. -- The Minot State University baseball team launched four home runs on its way to a 14-6 win over Northwest Missouri State on Opening Day in Pittsburg, Kansas.

The Beavers (1-0) win on Opening Day for the second-consecutive season with an eight-run victory over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opponent Northwest Missouri State (0-1).

The Beavers and Bearcats matchup again tomorrow for the second game in two days between these two teams.

RJ Martinez (W, 1-0) earns his first victory of the season after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

MSU was led by a big day offensively from Jordan Williams who hit two home runs and drove in three total runs during his 2-for-5 day. Nolan Monthei also hit a home run, his first of the season, and Kaiden Cardoso launched the first home run of his career.

The Beavers were held off the scoreboard until the top of the third inning when Drew Behling tripled to right-center scoring Ryley Humrighouse and Nolan Monthei doubled to center scoring Behling and giving the designated visitors a 2-0 lead.

MSU tacked on three more runs in the top of the 4th when Kaiden Cardoso touched them all due to an error in right field and Jordan Williams hit his first home run of the day, a solo shot, to extend the lead to 4-0. Humrighouse followed with a double to right-center scoring Tyler Wiltshire and capping a three-run fourth to give the Beavers a 5-0 lead through four innings.

In the 5th, Williams once again left the yard launching his second home run of the game and in back-to-back plate appearances. It was a two-run shot to stretch the advantage to 7-0.

The Beavers would roll on to score seven more runs, including a four-run seventh inning that was highlighted by Cardoso's first-career home run, and walk away with a 14-6 win on Monday in Pittsburg, Kan.

Monthei finished with two hits in five plate appearances alongside two runs scored and two RBI. Cardoso finished with three RBI after a two-hit performance that saw him score four runs. Williams finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Humrighouse finished 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI.

Freshman pitcher Cameron Bagshaw saw action as he came in out of the bullpen and delivered 1.0 inning with two strikeouts and freshman Trevyn Badger tossed the final 2.0 innings while allowing just one hit, walking two, and striking out two.
