MINOT, N.D. – The MSU women's soccer team opened their official 2021 spring season with a 2-0 victory of the Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State.
The contest got off to a slow start with not much offensive action in the first half. There were only two combined shots made in the first ten minutes of the game, both by the Yellow Jackets.
The Beaver offense quickly gained some momentum firing 12 shots of their own at the goal in the first half to outshoot Black Hills State 12-2 in the period.
Overall, the Minot State offense dominated Black Hills State, despite only netting two scores. Altogether, the Beavers outshot BHSU 21-3.
Minot State broke through on the scoreboard early in the second half with a Melanie Van Walstijn strike in the 52
nd minute.
Sofia Lewis assisted on Van Walstijn's score.
Minutes later, Lewis made her own move and was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick. The star forward took advantage and fired one past the keeper for a goal.
Lewis led the Beavers' offensive attack with seven total shots. Van Walstijn followed with four and
Tiffany Schennum added another three.
Maddie Kindred played all 90 minutes in goal for Minot State but did not record a save.
The Beavers will be back on the pitch to face rival UMary on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. back in the Air-Supported Dome at Minot State.
