Minot State Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Northern State

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State University softball team split a midweek doubleheader against Northern State University with a 6-3 win and 1-0 loss on Wednesday at South Hill Softball Complex. 

The Beavers moved to 15-15 with the win and the loss and Northern State is 21-11 with the results.

Jamie Odlum led the Beavers to a Game 1 victory with four RBI and Gabi Dawyduk was impressive from the circle in Game 2, despite the loss, she allowed just one unearned run in the one-run decision. Senior Isis Cabral also recorded a two-hit performance in the second game of the day. 

The Beavers pitching staff did not allow an earned run but their fielding let them down committing six errors in two games. Roxanne Ines was dominant in relief during Game 1, allowing one unearned run over a season-high 6.0 innings. Dawykduk struck out five batters with one walk over a complete-game season-high 7.0-inning performance. 

GAME 1 | Minot State 6, Northern State 3
Sophomore Jamie Odlum racked up four RBIs to help lead the Minot State Beavers over the Northern State Wolves 6-3 to open the day.

Sophomore Roxanne Ines (W, 2-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on four hits.

Odlum went 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk alongside four RBIs for the Beavers. Freshman Jaycie Rostad went 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk. Sophomore Jazmin Karunungan also helped out for Minot State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Minot State got an RBI single from sophomore Maggie Mercer, scoring freshman Gabi Dawyduk from second base.

The Beavers kept the deficit at 2-1 before tying the score in the third. Rostad came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the score level at 2-2.

That 2-2 tie turned into a 4-2 Minot State lead in the fifth. The Beavers picked up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple from Odlum.

Minot State held the Wolves without a run before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Beavers sent in two runs when a single from Odlum brought home freshman Lenora Watson and sophomore Lauryn DeGuzman, bringing the Minot State advantage to 6-2. Northern State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Beavers still held on for the 6-3 win.

GAME 2 | Northern State 1, Minot State 0
The Minot State Beavers were not able to score a run against Northern State pitcher senior Elyse Cuttic and were shut out 1-0 by the Wolves.

Freshman Gabi Dawyduk (L, 3-5) got the ball to start for Minot State (15-15, 8-8) and took the loss. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk, and striking out five.

At the plate, the Beavers were led by senior Isis Cabral, who went 2-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Minot State did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Beavers went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the fourth when Dawyduk made it into scoring position with two outs.
