Minot State Softball Splits Doubleheader at Minnesota Crookston, Opens NSIC Tournament on Thursday

CROOKSTON, Minn. -- The Minot State University softball team used a two-run home run from Lenora Watson in the top of the seventh inning of Game 2 to earn a 9-7 win and clinch a series split at Minnesota-Crookston on Sunday. 

The Beavers finish the regular season 22-20 overall and 15-13 in conference play. Entering the day, Minot State was sitting in the 10th and final postseason spot but the Beavers moved up to 8th place with their recent run winning six of the last seven games, and will face Sioux Falls in the first round of the NSIC Tournament on Thursday, May 13 in Rochester, Minnesota at 10 a.m. 

GAME 1 | Minnesota-Crookston 4, Minot State 1
The Beavers put together a valiant performance on Sunday but ultimately came up short, losing to the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles by the score of 4-1.

Junior Trinity Valentine (L, 12-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (21-20, 14-13).

At the plate, the Beavers were paced by sophomore Jamie Odlum, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double. Freshman Gabi Dawyduk furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State got an RBI single from Dawyduk, scoring senior Julia Suchan from third base. Minnesota-Crookston then scored three times over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 4-1 win.

GAME NOTES
» The Beavers' highest-scoring inning was the fourth when they pushed one run across.
» MSU pitchers faced 28 Minnesota-Crookston hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and three fly balls while striking out three.
» Odlum led the Beavers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
» Crookston was led offensively by senior Cassie Querry, who went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.
» Senior Katie Humhej led the Golden Eagles pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.


GAME 2 | Minot State 9, Minnesota-Crookston 7
The Beavers surrendered a 7-0 lead but rallied from tied 7-7 in the sixth inning to win in dramatic fashion, securing a 9-7 victory over the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles in Game 2.

Junior Trinity Valentine (W, 13-9) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State (22-20, 15-13). The right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out five.

Senior Isis Cabral led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Lenora Watson slammed a game-winning two-run home run in the top of the 7th inning, marking her first-career home run. Sophomore Jamie Odlum also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Minot State with two doubles and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Minot State plated two runs when Cabral left the yard with Odlum aboard.

The Beavers then held the Golden Eagles scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers.

Minot State held Minnesota-Crookston scoreless before expanding their lead to 7-0 the following inning. The Beavers picked up two runs when a single from senior Julia Suchan brought home senior Brooklyn Morrison and sophomore Jazmin Karunungan.

The Golden Eagles then tied the game at seven before Minot State came back to reclaim their advantage in the seventh inning. The Beavers scored twice on Watson's two-run homer, bringing the Minot State advantage to 9-7. The score remained 9-7 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers held on for the win.

» Karunungan had three base hits in the game for Minot State.
» Junior Trinity struck out five Golden Eagles hitters.
» The Beavers power output was led by Odlum, who picked up two extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» Minot State's highest-scoring inning was the third when it pushed three runs across.

Next up for Minot State is a matchup on Thursday, May 13 at 10 a.m. against Sioux Falls at the NSIC Tournament in Rochester, Minn.
