MINOT, N.D. - Power-play goals just 46 seconds apart spoiled the day for the Minot State women's hockey team.
Visiting McKendree scored all three of its goals with the extra-skater advantage, including twice in less than a minute in the third period as they skated away with a 3-2 win at Maysa Arena over the Beavers on Saturday.
The two teams face off again Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Maysa Arena to wrap up their weekend series.
The Bearcats (2-2-1 overall) opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the first period, but Minot State (3-2-0) rallied with a goal by
Krissy Rink off an assist by
Makena Welby with 7:15 gone in the second.
Knotted up at a goal apiece, the Beavers broke the tie midway through the third period as
Gillian Gervin scored off assists from
Matayah Metz and
Megan Norris for a 2-1 Minot State advantage.
But that changed quickly with the Beavers on a 4-minute penalty kill as McKendree scored with 7:50 left in the game, then broke a 2-2 tie just 46 seconds later with the second power-play goal of the extended penalty for the 3-2 lead.
While the Beavers tried to answer, Brianna Burke finished with 26 saves to fend off Minot State's comeback bid.
Jordan Ivanco finished with 20 saves in goal for Minot State.
