Behling blasts three homers as Minot State returns to winning ways, sweeps SW Minnesota State

MARSHALL, MN -- The Minot State Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 7-3 victory over the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Thursday. Drew Behling then led the way with a pair of home runs in the nightcap - giving him three on the day - as the Beavers completed an NSIC doubleheader sweep as Minot State took game two Thursday 10-1 against the host Mustangs.

Senior Jordan Chappell (4-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State (21-15 overall, 15-6 NSIC) in the opener. The left-hander went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out one. Freshman Logan Herrera also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing one hit, with one walk and two strikeouts.

At the plate, the Beavers were led by senior Blake Gallagher, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Drew Behling put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Ricky Apodaca also chipped in for Minot State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Minot State plated two runs when Gallagher left the yard with senior Declan Buckle aboard.

The Beavers then held the Mustangs scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by junior Kaiden Cardoso's single, which brought the Beavers lead to 4-0.

Minot State kept Southwest Minnesota State scoreless before building their lead to 5-0 the following inning. The Beavers scored a run on Behling's leadoff home run off freshman Owen Latendresse.

Minot State kept the Mustangs scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Apodaca, bringing the Minot State advantage to 6-0.

Southwest Minnesota State got within 6-3 until the Beavers scored again in the sixth inning to stretch their lead to 7-3. Minot State pushed across a run on Apodaca's two-out RBI double. The score remained 7-3 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.

MARSHALL, MN --Senior Drew Behling put together a stellar showing at the plate Thursday, hitting two homers to help power the Minot State Beavers past the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 10-1.

Senior Noah Myhre (2-1) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went five shutout innings, giving up three hits, three walks and striking out three. Sophomore Gage Yost also pitched well, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out three.

Behling went 2-for-5 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with five RBIs. Junior Kaiden Cardoso added to Behling's awesome power-hitting performance by going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Junior Ricky Apodaca also helped out for the Beavers, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Cardoso.

The Mustangs failed to push any runs across before the Beavers built on their lead in the seventh inning. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Behling, which brought the Beavers lead to 7-0.

Minot State kept Southwest Minnesota State without a run before building their lead to 10-0 in the ninth inning. The Beavers scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer from Behling that scored senior Blake Gallagher and Cardoso. Southwest Minnesota State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 10-1 win.
