Warriors walk-off win spoils valient effort by Beaver softball team at Winona State

GAME 1 | Winona State 7, Minot State 5

WINONA, Minn. -- Despite picking up 11 hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Winona State, Minot State was unable to push across more runs, as the Beavers were defeated by the Warriors 7-5 on Sunday in the first game of an NSIC doubleheader.

Senior Trinity Valentine (11-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (27-15 overall, 8-10 NSIC). Junior Zoya Robbins finished the ballgame and went three innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking none and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Beavers were led by junior Lenora Watson, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Junior Jamie Odlum put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Kiera Shwaluk also contributed for Minot State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers were trailing 2-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Watson drove in two runs for Minot State with a single that scored freshman Abbey Kelley and Shwaluk.

The Warriors then scored five runs to retake their advantage heading into the fifth inning, when the Beavers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Minot State pushed across a run on Odlum's two-out RBI double, which tightened the Warriors lead to 7-3.

Minot State held the Warriors off the board before narrowing the gap to 7-4 in the sixth. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Alina Gonzalez.

Offensively, the Beavers were paced by freshman Abbey Kelley, who went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI. Freshman Abby Lohse put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Brooklyn Morrison also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
