Minot State completes series sweep over Upper Iowa with 7-0 victory Sunday

MINOT, ND --Senior RJ Martinez was dealing on Sunday, throwing a five-hit shutout to lead the Minot State Beavers past the Upper Iowa Peacocks 7-0.

Martinez (4-0) went the distance for Minot State (15-13, 9-4), giving up five hits, walking two and striking out 13. The 13 Ks was a new single-game, NCAA Division II-era school record.

In the batter's box, the Beavers were led by junior Ricky Apodaca, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and four RBIs. Senior Jordan Williams put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Senior Blake Gallagher also contributed for Minot State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Williams, scoring senior Drew Behling from second base.

Minot State then tacked on runs in four more innings, with their biggest output coming in the sixth when they scored two times. Those two runs came across on Apodaca's two-run homer to right.
