Minot State gives 16th-ranked Mavericks a battle but drops a pair on Monday

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State softball team gave 16th-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato all it could handle but fell 3-0 and 4-2 in a season-ending, NSIC doubleheader Monday at the South Hill Softball Complex.

GAME 1 | Minnesota State 3, Minot State 0

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State Beavers were not able to score a run against Minnesota State pitcher senior Mackenzie Ward on Monday and were shut out 3-0 by the Mavericks.

Freshman Reegan Floyd (8-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (28-20 overall, 9-15 NSIC). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out six.

Junior Jazmin Karunungan led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Minot State managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Beavers last got a runner on third in the first when Karunungan made it 60 feet away from scoring with nobody out.

MINOT, ND --The Minot State Beavers put together a valiant effort on Monday, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Minnesota State Mavericks by the score of 4-2.

Senior Trinity Valentine (11-10) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Sophomore Jasmine Blizzard was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Alina Gonzalez, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double and an RBI. Junior Lenora Watson furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Brooklyn Morrison also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Watson, scoring junior Jazmin Karunungan from second base.

The Mavericks then rallied to score four runs to take a 4-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fourth. Minot State pushed across a run on Gonzalez's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Mavericks. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
