MINOT, N.D. – The fight in the Beavers was plenty big enough, but in the end, in-state rival and 14
th-ranked the University of Mary was just too much.
The Marauders won all but one match, despite several close contests for the Minot State wrestlers who fell 41-4 in an NSIC dual Sunday at the MSU Dome.
Minot State senior
Oscar Nellis picked up the lone win for the Beavers in dominating fashion at 125-pounds, a 12-4 major decision win over Chase Milligan.
Then came the close battles, including a great tussle between the Beavers'
James Davis and No. 3-ranked Reece Barnhardt from UMary at 133 pounds. Battling hard, Davis led 7-6 in the third round before a late takedown by Barnhardt and one point for riding time gave the Marauder wrestler a 9-7 decision and spoiled Davis' upset bid.
In the day's other thriller, Mary heavyweight Luke Tweeton survived in double overtime for a 3-2 decision over
Jake Swirple in a battle that came down to the riding-time tiebreaker after the end of 3 extra minutes of OT action as Tweeton held a 2-second riding-time advantage for the win.
Also adding a strong effort for Minot State, but coming up just short, was
Brendan Barnes at 165 pounds as Barnes lost a 7-4 decision.
Minot State (6-6 overall, 1-3 NSIC) looks to bounce back from the loss with another home match as the Beavers host 10
th-ranked Upper Iowa on Friday night at 7 p.m.
