MINOT, N.D. – Fantastic finish doesn't even describe it.
The Minot State women's hockey team notched itself a small upset on Friday scoring with 7 seconds left to upend visiting Adrian (Mich.) at the Maysa Arena.
The win was the fourth straight for the fifth-ranked Beavers, and the second head-to-head against the second-ranked Bulldogs in the two teams' head-to-head series.
That series continues Saturday when Adrian plays Minot State again at 3:45 p.m. at the Maysa Arena.
Olivia Opheim netted the game-winner for Minot State (12-4-1 overall) with 7.6 seconds left as she stole a breakout pass by the Adrian defense, skated in and wristed a shot past goalie Judith Schneider for the 2-1 win.
That lifted the Beavers past the Bulldogs (14-4-0) in a closely contested game that saw
Sydney Spicer give Minot State a 1-0 lead with 2:49 left in the first on the power play.
Adrian responded with a Hailey Wiltshire goal midway through the second, tying the score 1-1 and setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Haylie Biever finished with 28 saves in goal in the win for Minot State, which also got an assist each from Opheim and
Jordan Kulbida on Spicer's first-period goal.
