ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – A small offensive explosion is all the Beavers needed to open up enough of a lead to fend off the Sun Devils on Friday night.
Christian Kadolph and
Joey Moffatt scored just 1 minute, 16 seconds apart for the No. 1 Minot State men's hockey team, which broke a tie and took a two-goal lead just that quickly in a 4-3 victory over No. 17 Arizona State on the first day of the ACHA Showcase.
The Beavers are back in action Saturday playing No. 4 UNLV in the Showcase at 12:10 p.m. in Romeoville, Illinois.
Quick strikes proved to be the Beavers thing Friday night against the Sun Devils as team captain
Carter Barley opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the game, finishing off assists from
Colby Joseph and
Logan Cyca.
Arizona State battled back to tie it midway through the first period, but
Walker Jerome finished off an assist from Barley for a 2-1 Beaver lead before the end of the opening session.
The Sun Devils answered early in the second period, but Kadolph snapped the 2-2 tie with 8:11 gone off assists from Barley and
Troy Hamilton, then Moffatt added a power-play goal 1:16 late off assists from
Reid Arnold and Kadolph for a 4-2 Minot State (12-1-0) lead.
Just enough it turned out as Arizona State (7-6-1) scored late in the second to close within a goal, but neither team put a puck in the net in the third and the Beavers held on for the victory.
Riley Wallace finished with 15 saves in goal for Minot State in the win.
