MINOT, N.D. – After two weeks in the friendly confines of the MSU Dome, the Minot State men's wrestling team hits the road for its final two regular-season away duals, wrestling at Minnesota State, Mankato on Thursday, then at No. 22-ranked Southwest Minnesota State on Friday.
Against the Mavericks (5-3 duals, 2-3 NSIC), the Beavers (6-8, 1-5) face a team featuring two ranked wrestlers, including defending NCAA Division II National Champion at heavyweight, Darrell Mason.
Mason is ranked No. 7 this season at 285 pounds, just two spots ahead of Minot State's own
Jake Swirple (11-3), who is No. 9 in the most recent NWCA Coaches poll.
Also ranked highly for the Mavericks is Brock Luthens who is No. 12 at 141 pounds. He is scheduled to square off on the mats against Minot State's
Ethan Wonser (10-10).
Swirple will face another top-ranked wrestler on Friday went Minot State visits Southwest Minnesota State (1-5, 1-5) as Jacob Dykes is No. 11 at heavyweight.
Also ranked for the Mustangs is Caden Steffan, who is ranked No. 2 at 184 pounds. He'll square off against either
Cayden White (12-10) or
Shane Hansen (6-7) for the Beavers.
As for key wrestlers to watch for Minot State,
Oscar Nellis (12-3) leads the way at 125 pounds as he's won 5-of-6 matches of late.
Also adding wins this past weekend and heading onto the road with moment are
Kelby Armstrong (5-1) at 149 pounds,
Cannon Potts (11-3) at 174 points,
Dustin Swisher (13-8) at 197 pounds, and Swirple.
